Does anyone know where the type/serial number is on these things is as we need to know the date it was manufactured? Used extensively in their trucks in the UK, it has been out of production for 20+ years.

Further afield, Bedford also rebadged Isuzu engines. The serial number was stamped on the block at the fron on the LH side of the engine looking from the rear, up by the joint of the block and cylinder head. Member Username: listerdiesel Post Number: 9 Registered: 03-2005 Posted on Saturday, April 09, 2005 - 09:29 am:        The 220 and 330 engines used the CAV DPA rotary disributor pump and the timing spline on the pump has a master spline and groove arrangement so you cannot get the pump in wrong. The 300 diesel used an inline pump on some engines. I don't recall working on any that didn't have this arrangement, but just in case I'll check on the recon pump I have in the workshop and see what that has. The timing gears have an idler between the crankshaft and injection pump drive, and the whole set of marks on the gears only comes up together every 170 turns (or something like that) so don't take anything apart without getting everything into a good rotational position where you know where the engine is.

Don't turn the engine over while the pump is out! Peter Visitor Posted on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 11:16 am:        This is my first real Boat and I'm new at this and diesels to I'm 45yrs old and I have a new used 29ft glen-L and 1 of the motors is a Bedford 220, I ran it out of fuel last weekend the tank showed 1/2 but was wrong, so i changed all the fuel filters, but the problum is how do I prime the system for the Bedford my other motor is Perkins and it started up fine, Is there a manual pump or a bleeder screw? Someone told me that i have to bleed each of the injectors by loosing the nuts one at a time witch i've done and I am still doing and how long or many times should this take? Member Username: listerdiesel Post Number: 11 Registered: 03-2005 Posted on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 11:58 am:        Terry: If you have a DPA pump (rotary type) then there is a sequence of bleeding that you must use.

Start with locating the hand pump on the side of the block, and then loosen the little bleed valve on the pump body. There may be two of them, one on the very top and one on the side. Do the side one first, loosen the bleed screw and pump until clear fuel comes out with no bubbles. Tighten it up again, then do the top one, tightening up once clear fuel comes through.

Once the pump body is clear of air, the pumping element has to be purged, and the only way to do this is to loosen off two injector pipes at the injector end, and turn the engine over until fuel is seen to be squirting out of the loose joint. Tighten each one up and the engine should fire and pick up.

Because the DPA pump has a single pumping element and no bypass bleed feed like modern engines, it's always a pain to bleed them, but if you do this in sequence you should be OK. When we serviced the Bedford trucks and changed the filter, we always filled the fresh filter up with diesel and usually it would pull the air through without bleeding, but once you get a bubble in the element, you are stuck! Member Username: listerdiesel Post Number: 15 Registered: 03-2005 Posted on Friday, February 10, 2006 - 03:10 pm:        Bedford spares for the 220cu in truck engine are probably getting scarce on the ground these days, as they have been out of production for 15 or more years. We have a 220 DPA pump (hydraulic governor) which has been overhauled and possibly an injector or two ditto. As far as engine parts are concerned I will have to check with our local dealer and see what the position is.

The injection pump can be a Simms in-line type with pneumatic governor or the later CAV DPA with Hydraulic governor. Let me know which pump you have and also the CAV numbers off the injectors. Both turn over fine and seem to produce compression.

However neither DPA pump will pump fuel either to the bleed screw or injector outlets. One lift pump has been replaced and fuel is present at the injector pump inlet and return line on both engines. We have been trying to pump/bleed for hours! Has anyone experience with these pumps as we're clean out of ideas now. The engines are very low hours (circa 100 hours each but probably 30 years old now!) I have had The CAV DPA injector pumps on the perkins diesels refuse to prime after sitting empty of fuel for many weeks or longer and there is a small screen filter and valve on the inlet side of the pump, the filters will block with old varnished fuel and also stick the valve, a good cleaning may work??.

If you are not carefull all the crapp in the screen can fall out the bottem into the pump,don't ask how i know. I like to use a sucker and suck as much stuff out as i can before messing with the valve. There are other things that could be wrong,but try cleaning first. The new head gasket was found to be 0.2mm thinner around the oil transfer port so was refitted using copper shims and an 'o'ring. It ran clean for about an hour before the oil droplets appeared in the exhaust again. Can anyone provide a clue to this phenomenon and, more importantly, a fix.Thanks. Member Username: oslin04 Post Number: 30 Registered: 10-2006 Posted on Sunday, August 16, 2009 - 08:13 am:        Hi Woodman, Well as a Marine Engineer I would suggest the head gasket has failed to do the job, and I am not sure the O ring was a good idea as they tend to deform or melt with the heat,and depending where the shims are they might jack the head off the gasket slightly. Can you get the correct gasket for it? Or have one made up from solid copper if all else fails, I do not recommend this unless things are desperate, but I do know of engines that have run successfully with two head gaskets fitted, although this is normally done to take up a bowed head.

The coupling has part number 7133146 etched into its' surface, and the drive shaft (also referred to as a 'torsion bar') has no identifying marks on it.
