These were and are excellent tractors. There was a whole family of them from 10 hp to 16 hp; the only real difference being the engine. The unique feature of this tractor series is a VariDrive system that allows variable speed using a belt and sliding sliding sheaves like a combine. The earlier models use a manual PTO clutch and the later ones use an electrical PTO slutch like on an automotive air conditioner. There was an optional electric lift and a fairly rare optional hydraulic lift. The engines were all Kohler single-cylinder and the model number indicates the hp.
I have had a 210 for four years and had very little trouble with it. I have a manual if you need any information from that. There were two decks available for these tractors from JD. There was a 38 inch and a 48 roughly. The smaller deck was good if you have a narrow walk gate or shed door to get through. The decks are prone to rust if left outside, and belts will wear out.

Blades and spindles need replaced from time to time. Thanks for the imfo Steve! I just bought(today) this JD 214 for $400.00. It has the hydraulic lift the 48' deck and the manual PTO.
I also got a set of wheel weights and a snow blade. The tractor is complete and in fairly good shape.
The guy I bought it from knows nothing about tractors and says it runs fine for 15 to 30 minutes but then quits. I have not tried to start it yet but I hope to this weekend sometime. As far as any other imfo you could provide from your manual, I would greatly appreciate it. If you have a scanner you could just E-mail it to me, if not, don't worry about it, you've already been a big help. Thanks agian for your time!!
I also just bought a JD214. I gave $800 for mine, it only has the manual lift, but I also got a snow blower, tire chains, and a moldboard plow.
By the serial #, mine is 120559, it is a little newer, 1982. Parts are avaible from Deere, for a price. Some Kohler parts are avalible at As far as running problems, don't forget this engine still has ignition points, under the little black box, 3/4' x 1 1/2', behind the pull-off front grill of the tractor. I live in Cahokia. IL, across the river from St.
Check out Yahoo's JD garden tractor club for another good forum. If you're going to use the snow blade you will need rear wheel weights and chains. These tractors aren't heavy enough to use the HP they have; you need to use momentum to push any significant snow. The weights and chains just keep you from getting stuck all the time. You'll like the hydraulic lift. I sure want one. I'd pull the carburetor off and clean it out just for safety's sake.
If that doesn't fix your problem try a new coil. The coil is more likely anyhow, but I let my carburetor get full of crud. I will see what I can do aboput a manual since I do not have a scanner.
