Ford sold a re-badged version in a few Asian markets under the name Ford Ixion or Ford MAV. The name Mazda 5 began with the second generation and has remained in use since that time. The first generation model included two or three rows and could seat five or seven people while the second generation was a three row model that could seat up to six passengers in America and seven outside of the United States. In both generations the floors were flat with a second row that was removable and could fold down and rear seats that would fold flat.

At the time of its release in April 1999 this model was one of the least expensive seven seat vehicles available for sale. It was available with a choice of front or rear drive and a four-speed automatic transmission. The new model has been on the market since mid 2005 and carries the Mazda 5 name everywhere but in Japan.

Although Mazda classifies it as a mid-sized wagon, it is classified as a mini-minivan in the United States. It shares many of its parts with the Mazda 3 and replaced the Mazda MPV as Mazda's minivan in the majority of the export markets. The Mazda 5 is only slightly larger than the 1984-1989 Toyota Van. It became a competitive in the North American market in 2006 with the Mercedes Benz B200 and in 2007 with the Kia Rondo. Updates for the 2006 model year provided fewer options for the Mazda 5 than other markets offered. There were no front-to-back roof rails in the North American version; these were standard equipment in other markets.

The North American market didn't include a back-up camera, choice of engines, or power-assist side doors. The limited number of units with all-wheel-drive were only available in Japan for the 2006 models. Mazda added electronic stability and traction controls to the Mazda 5 for model year 2010. These additions were safety features previously listed as oversights on these vehicles. For 2012 the U.S. Mazda 5 offered a 157 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic.

The Touring and Grand Touring models also offered a five-speed automatic but also included a manual mode. Sales of the third generation Mazda 5 began in July 2010. For model year 2016 the Mazda 5 is only being sold in Canada-it was discontinued in the United States in February 2016. Mazda reported production of all minivans could end by the end of 2017. This doesn't mean Mazda 5 parts and accessories will not be available for those who own these minivans.

It will likely be sometime before owners will find it difficult to locate Mazda 5 parts for sale.
